If you're running a business in New Zealand, you've probably heard of an NZBN (New Zealand Business Number). But what exactly is it, and do you need one?
The good news is that an NZBN is free, easy to obtain, and can make doing business much simpler.
What is an NZBN?
An NZBN is a unique 13-digit number that identifies your business. Think of it as your business's official ID.
It allows other businesses, suppliers, customers, and government agencies to identify your business and access your publicly available business information through the NZBN Register.
Who can get an NZBN?
If you're currently in business in New Zealand, you may be eligible for an NZBN, including:
Sole traders (self-employed)
Partnerships
Trusts
Charities and some other organisations
If your business is already registered with the Companies Office (such as a limited company or incorporated society), you will usually have been automatically allocated an NZBN.
Why should you have one?

How do you apply?

For most sole traders, applications are approved instantly if you verify your identity using a New Zealand driver licence or passport. If additional information is required (for example, for partnerships, trusts, or alternative ID), applications are generally processed within three working days.
What do you need?
For a sole trader application, you'll generally need:
Your business IRD number (this may be your personal IRD number)
Proof of identity (NZ driver licence or passport is the quickest option)
A RealMe login and MyNZBN account.
